Chapter One: The Fortuitous Meeting

A lone rider trotted down the road, horse screaming as he tore into the heart of the elven kingdoms, fleeing from a fast moving cloud following him. "Come on, girl, just a little farther," he encouraged as he raced down the road. He could tell she was fast running out of steam, and he used what little enrgy he had left to boost her reserves. He felt every bump in the road as they raced along to Ardiste, towards what little hope and sanctuary remained in the world. He saw his goal, and as he raced across the border, he heard a scream of rage emanating from the cloud, and all went black.

I woke up three days later in a hut. Don't ask me how I know, I just do. The stone was still in my pocket, I could feel the grinding vibration it emitted on my left heart. I got up slowly, working my way to a sitting position, and noticed the man watching me, swords drawn. "Do I really warrant that attention?" I asked, grinning in spite of the pounding in my skull. "We know who you are, and what you can do," the swordsman growled, taking a ready position. "And you think some crackpot swordsman will stop me. I was startled when, instead of being insulted, he grinned at me. "Do you not know me? My name is Shiva, also known as the Blades of Death." Shiva. Oh crap. Possibly the world's deadliest swordsman. No wonder he was confident. I don't think he'd lost since halfway through training. Thankfully, being a Guardian, I had a slight advantage: Magick. Let me explain a few things. Since the Darkening, only a tiny percent of the world has access to magick. When the Darkening first hit, a group of the nine main races got together and formed a group known as the Guardians. We gather artifacts from around the world, hoarding them, keeping them from the Evil One. Our magick comes from our access to Lode Stones, and they infuse our bodies, allowing us to manipulate the subtle energy of the world. It's deep down, but it's still there, waiting for the time when the Stone of Healing can be remade and for those with the Gift to return to the world. Connected deep into the world, I tapped into the spirit forces, causing his sword to become liquid, flowing into the earthen floor.
He stared at me, openmouthed, watching as he beloved sword melded with the ground. "What madness is this?" He asked, clearly shaken, and I grinned in rememberance of how rare my gift was. "Didn't think about that, did you?" Specialists tend to ignore magick and focus only on their area of expertise, relying on their immense skill to see them through. There's a reason the Guardians recruit young. People see a kindatur, or youngling, and they relax, ignoring the Guardian's symbols tattooed into my flesh. That's a mistake. Despite only being a quarter of the way through my training, I knew magick, and that made me dangerous. "Do you want your sword back?" I asked, grinning a grin that only someone my age can. He furiously threw the hilt at me and stormed out. I nestled in the warm bed and waited for someone important to come.

When I woke up, it was dark, and a young girl was watching me. She looked to be my age, maybe a little younger, but she kept staring. I watched her for a while under slightly raised lids, keeping my breathing deep and pretending to sleep. Also, I was trying to keep the odd expression off my face, because the girl staring at me, while pretty, was started to get a little disturbing.
"Can I help you?" I asked, smiling my most charming smile, while trying to get her to stop staring.
"Father asked me to bring you your clothes, they've been washed."
I blushed, realizing the clothes I had on weren't my own.
"So... Who undressed me?" I ask, severely embarrassed at the thought that it might have been her.
"Father. He emptied your pockets, but he wouldn't touch the stone you have with his bare hand, apparently it pained him greatly."
"Yes, it DOES tend to have that effect on people. Did you happen to see where my book went to?"
"Not really. Your horse nearly died of exhaustion, you know," she said, glaring at me as she said it.
"Yes, I do realize, but it was necessary. I was being chased, and I couldn't let the stone get taken."
Just then, a veritable giant strode into the room, long black hair, shoulders that barely fit in the doorway, and scars coating his arms.
"Ah, good, you're awake, there's something you need to see," he said, gesturing for me to follow. As I walked out the door, my hope was nearly crushed by what I saw.

Write more later.[i][b]
